Korean BBQ 101: A First-Timer’s Guide in Atlanta
How to order, what the sides are, the grilling etiquette, and how much it actually costs — Duluth edition.
Korean BBQ is a social meal: meat grilled at the table, shared, wrapped in lettuce, paired with endless small sides. If your first encounter feels overwhelming, it’s because the experience is genuinely different from an American steakhouse. Here’s how to walk in and feel at home.
Two kinds of places, very different bills
- All-You-Can-Eat (AYCE) — one flat price, unlimited meats. Around $35–$50 per person in Duluth. Great for first-timers and big groups. Typical 90–120 minute time limit.
- A La Carte (by the plate) — order what you want. Better meat quality, smaller portions, higher end result. Expect $60–$100 per person if you order generously.
The cuts you’ll see on every menu
| Korean | What it is | Try this first |
|---|---|---|
| 삼겹살 (samgyeopsal) | Thick-cut pork belly, usually unmarinated | If you’re brand new — start here |
| 불고기 (bulgogi) | Thin-sliced beef, sweet-soy marinade | Safest flavor for anyone |
| 갈비 (galbi / kalbi) | Beef short ribs, sweet-savory marinade | The signature — don’t miss |
| 차돌박이 (chadolbaegi) | Thinly shaved brisket, quick-sear | Dip in sesame oil + salt |
| 막창 (makchang) | Pork intestine — acquired taste | Skip round one |
Those little dishes: banchan (반찬)
The parade of small plates that arrives before the meat — kimchi, pickled radish, bean sprouts, scallion salad, sometimes steamed egg — is free and refillable. Ask for more when a dish runs low. You don’t pay per banchan; they’re part of the meal.
Grilling etiquette
- Server starts the grill at most places. Don’t try to manage it yourself at first — they’ll flip, cut, and advise.
- Meat cooks fast. Chadolbaegi is done in 10 seconds. Samgyeopsal in 2–3 minutes.
- Ssam (wrap) is the move. Take a lettuce leaf, add rice (optional), a piece of grilled meat, a swipe of ssamjang (the reddish-brown paste), and a sliver of raw garlic or green chili. Fold, eat in one bite.
- Don’t use the same tongs for raw and cooked meat. Servers usually rotate for you.
Drinks
- Sikhye (식혜) — a chilled, sweet rice drink; the classic pairing after a heavy grill.
- Boricha (보리차) — roasted barley tea, served warm or cold; cuts through the smoke.
- Sujeonggwa (수정과) — cinnamon-ginger punch with dried persimmon; a festive non-alcoholic option.
Paying & tipping
Korean BBQ in the US follows standard American tipping — 18–22% of the pre-tax total. Many AYCE spots require the whole table to order the same AYCE tier. Split checks are usually possible but slower; pre-announcing helps.
Where to go in Atlanta first
- Iron Age Korean Steakhouse (Duluth, Alpharetta) — clean AYCE, good for beginners.
- Gen Korean BBQ House (Duluth) — AYCE with wider variety.
- Miss Gogi BBQ (Suwanee) — solid mid-priced a la carte.
- Breakers Korean BBQ (Duluth) — higher end, premium beef.
