Summer + Refreshing = K-pop

Listening to K-pop all year round is enjoyable, but K-pop during the summer is especially fun. The refreshing feel from the fast rhythms and lively melodies! This is likely why the annual K-pop “summer battle” takes place. While the “summer battle” isn’t an official event, many groups release summer songs each year. The now-defunct SISTAR, for example, is a prime example of this trend. SISTAR was known as the “SUMMER QUEEN,” responsible for many of Korea’s summer hits. Although they disbanded a few years ago, Red Velvet and SEVENTEEN have taken over. Red Velvet alternates between the concepts of “Red” and “Velvet,” typically returning with the “Red” concept during the summer. SEVENTEEN is a prime example of a “refreshing idol” group, boasting numerous songs that are as refreshing and cool as a soda, perfect for summer. As of 2024, KISS OF LIFE and RIIZE are continuing this tradition.
